Zooming in: South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad analysis
South Africa sent a warning sign to all the probable contenders for the upcoming T20 World Cup after turning over England in the T20I series in July. The Proteas will look at the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia as an opportunity to end their trophy drought in ICC competitions.
Temba Bavuma has recovered from his injury and will take over the captaincy reins from the stand-in skipper David Miller. South African head coach Mark Boucher will be parting ways with the national team after the conclusion of the tournament and will hope to make it a memorable last assignment.
SWOT Analysis of South Africa for T20 World Cup
Strength-
South Africa boasts of a talented group of players that has a perfect balance of youth and experience. While veterans like David Miller and Quinton de Kock bring their match-winning skills to the table, Tristan Stubbs and Aiden Markram bring the exuberance of youth to the fore for the Proteas.
Weakness-
The African side has never been short of talent and has produced world-class cricketers throughout their illustrious cricketing history. But they have a habit of underperforming in major ICC tournaments, which has seen them succumb to embarrassing defeats at times. They will try to break the voodoo under the former South African wicketkeeper-batter.
Opportunity-
While the country is trying to turn over a new page by launching a revamped domestic T20 league, the South African team has the opportunity to provide a big boost to their country by winning their maiden ICC trophy. Temba Bavuma will have to conjure what his predecessors have failed to do on numerous occasions.
Threat-
South Africa might not be the outright favourites for the tournament but have an outside chance of clinching the trophy given the talented pool of players at their disposal. But they will be up against some of the heavy favourites like defending champions Australia and a dominant India side in the tournament. An unpredictable English side also poses a great threat to the chances of the Proteas in the upcoming tournament in Australia.
