Zimbabwe announce 15-member squad for T20 World Cup 2022
In the recent turn of developments, Zimbabwe Cricket have announced their squad for the 2022 T20 World Cup. The regular T20I captain Craig Ervine has been included in the strong-looking 15-member sqaud for the mega tournament in Australia. Alongside Ervine, star players like Wellington Masakadza and Tendai Chatara also make their return from their injuries.
Ervine, 37, missed Zimbabwe’s recent ODI series against India at home and Australia tour due to a hamstring injury he suffered during the T20I series against Afghanistan on August 2. Ervine’s return to the squad is a big boost for Zimbabwe who lacked strong leadership qualities against the bigger opponents in the recent games.
Star pacer Blessing Muzarabani, who returned to squad for the Australia tour, is also included in the squad alongside experienced all-rounders like Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza. Regis Chakabva, the first-choice wicketkeeper, who stood in as skipper for Zimbabwe in Ervine’s absence also makes in to the squad for the mega tournament in Australia.
Zimbabwe favourite to progress to Super 12?
Zimbabwe are placed in Group B of the First Round, where they face West Indies, Ireland, and Scotland. The top two teams from each group will progress to the Super 12. West Indies, the two-time champions, are favourites to top the group despite their recent struggles in T20I cricket.
Both Ireland and Zimbabwe have been impressive in the recent T20I games and deserve their spot in the World Cup. But one of them is unlikely to progress to the next round, however, a good result against West Indies will help both teams to reach Super 12. In Group A, Sri Lanka are favourites to top the table with the Netherlands, Namibia, and UAE being the other three teams.
