WTC final: Tendulkar’s interesting take on how to decide the final champions in future

There are only two days left for ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and New Zealand. The excitement has reached its peak with everyone feeling the heat and tension on what is going to unfold in the five days of the Test. While the experts and critics have given their verdict as to who might win the final, Sachin Tendulkar has come with a rather interesting take on the topic.

The WTC cycle was played for two years, with the teams playing each other home and away. During this period, India played six series while their opponents the Blackcaps played five series. While the latter played predominately at home and dominated the teams, the former won two away series as well in West Indies and Australia.

The winners of the inaugural WTC will be decided by just a sole match which Tendulkar feels should be changed. The master blaster was not the only one to suggest this change, as even Ravi Shastri, Yuvraj Singh and Ravi Ashwin felt that the ICC should play best of three finals before announcing the winners.

Sachin Tendulkar’s unique suggestion for the WTC final

The former India opening batter feels rather than playing only one Test, the ICC should look into giving teams a series to decide the winners. He further elaborated on the fact that how teams fight it out in a two-year cycle and then get a chance to enter into the finals.

Because you look at T20 or even for that matter 50-over World Cup, you just play each opposition once and then you get to the finals. And it’s only one match in the finals. And here, you have played four-match Test series in Australia, you have played a four-match Test series in India against England. So you have played these series which had 3 or 4 Test matches, and suddenly you get to finals and it’s only one game,” Tendulkar told Times Now.

The legendary cricketer stated that a minimum of three Tests should be played out by the top two teams so that they get a chance to bounce back if they happen to have one bad game. Tendulkar further concluded by saying that it will be challenging to bring teams to play these many Tests, but he has not ruled the possibility of it in near future.
