WPL Auction 2023: Final squad of all teams

Five franchises put a terrific show on display at the first-ever Women’s Premier League 2023 Auction and formed a very strong squad for the tournament’s inaugural edition. The inaugural edition is scheduled to begin on March 4, 2023 and to play the summit clash on March 26. The entire tournament will be staged at two venues in Mumbai- the Brabourne Stadium and the D.Y. Patil Stadium.

The auction started with RCB getting the services of the Indian vice-captain Smriti Mandhana for a whopping INR 3.4 crore, after winning a bidding war against Mumbai Indians, as she became the most expensive player at the WPL 2023. RCB kept their game going as they further roped in big names like Sophie Devine, Ellyse Perry, Renuka Singh, Heather Knight, Dane van Niekerk, and Richa Ghosh to strengthen their squad.

Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur found her spot at the Mumbai Indians and grabbed an INR 1.8 crore deal. Mumbai too did really well, as they acquired England’s Natalie Sciver, Amelia Kerr, alongside Indian stars Yastika Bhatia and Pooja Vastrakar. Delhi Capitals roped in big names like Meg Lanning, Jemimah Rodrigues, South Africa’s finest all-rounder Marizanne Kapp and Indian U19-winning captain Shafali Verma.

Gujarat Giants, a team with a very strong coaching setup, made their biggest purchase of INR 3.2 crore by signing Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner. They also got the Australian opener Beth Mooney, English opener Sophia Dunkley, Caribbean star Deandra Dottin, and Indian all-rounders Harleen Deol and Sneh Rana.

UP Warriorz too had a great outing at the auction. They roped in England’s finest bowler Sophie Ecclestone and ICC’s T20I Player of the Year Tahlia McGrath, the Australian sensation. They also got the Australian wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy and South Africa’s pace spearhead Shabnim Ismail while also getting the services of Indian spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad.

Overall, the first-ever auction was completed successfully, and several players of India’s U19 World Cup winning squad too found themselves a home at the WPL 2023. The leading run-scorer of the tournament- Shweta Sehrawat, Soppadhandi Yashasri, and Parshavi Chopra were roped in by the UP franchise, whereas Titas Sadhu was bought by Delhi Capitals.

While Mandhana attracted the highest bid of INR 3.4 crore, Ashleigh Gardner and Natalie Sciver attracted the second-highest bid of INR 3.2 crore.
