World Cup 2023: Maheesh Theekshana ruled out of South Africa game
In a big setback for Sri Lanka, star spinner Maheesh Theekshana has been ruled out of their opening match against South Africa in the 2023 World Cup. The 23-year-old sustained a hamstring injury during the Asia Cup Super Four clash against Pakistan and missed the final against India. Despite hopes of a quick recovery, Theekshana’s injury has not healed in time for their highly anticipated World Cup opener.
Theekshana was initially included in Sri Lanka’s World Cup squad with optimism about his fitness, but he was unable to join the team in India for their preparations, raising concerns about his availability. Unfortunately, just a day before the crucial match against South Africa, it has been confirmed that Theekshana will not be able to take the field.
This injury blow not only weakens Sri Lanka’s spin department but also robs them of the services of their spin twins. Hasaranga, who was not initially included in the World Cup squad, may only be considered as a replacement player if he recovers before the tournament concludes, as he also is ruled out due to an injury.
Theekshana has been a valuable asset for Sri Lanka, taking 44 wickets in 27 games with an impressive average of 23.45, which drops to 17.45 this year. His partnership with Hasaranga in the middle overs has been a potent weapon for the team, making their absence a significant setback.
In addition to Theekshana and Hasaranga, Sri Lanka will also be without the services of fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera, who failed to recover from a torn muscle in time for the World Cup. However, there is some good news as Lahiru Kumara and Dilshan Madushanka, who were previously sidelined due to injuries during the Asia Cup, have regained fitness and are part of the World Cup squad.
As Sri Lanka face South Africa in their World Cup opener without key players, fans and cricket enthusiasts will eagerly await the performance of the remaining squad members as they aim to make their mark in this prestigious tournament.
