Women’s World Cup: All the past winners
The twelfth edition of the Women’s Cricket World Cup is set to begin on March 4, 2022, in New Zealand. Eight teams will participate in a total of 31 matches across six venues including the semi-finals and the Final. The summit clash will be played on Sunday, April 3 at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The WC titles have been dominated by the Australian team who have a terrific track record in the tournament.
Let’s take a look at the past winners of all the editions
3.New Zealand (1)
2000 was a great year for New Zealand Cricket as the Men’s cricket team defeated India in the Champions Trophy final and the Women’s cricket team lifted the World Cup trophy by beating Trans-Tasman rivals Australia in the final clash.
It was December 23, 2000, and the venue was Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln, New Zealand. Kiwi skipper Emily Drumm won the toss and elected to bat first. Kathryn Ramel and Rebecca Rolls scored 41 and 34 runs respectively as Kiwis were bundled out for just 184 runs. In reply, Belinda Clark top-scored with 91 runs but New Zealand bowlers dismissed Australia to 180 runs in 49.1 overs to win a thriller of a final by four runs. New Zealand won their maiden and the only World Cup title at home on that day.
2.England (4)
Out of the 11 WC editions, England Women’s team has won the second-most titles (4). The first-ever World Cup including the Men’s WC was played by Women’s teams in 1973 in England and the hosts lifted the trophy based on a points system. The top team England with 20 points clinched the first-ever Women’s WC played by beating Australia who had 17 points.
The next WC which was hosted by England was also won by the English side in 1993 when they defeated the Kiwis in the final by 67 runs. In 2009, Australia hosted the WC and England again beat the Kiwis in the final by four wickets under the leadership of Charlotte Edwards to clinch their third title. In the last Women’s WC which was held in 2017 in the UK, the hosts won an exhilarating contest against India in the final by nine runs at the iconic Lords ground to achieve their fourth WC triumph.
1.Australia (6)
Like England, Australia also won their maiden WC on points system when they defeated rivals England in India in 1978. The next two editions in 1982 and in 1988 were also won by Australia by beating the same English side. It was a hat-trick of WC title wins by the team from down under against the same very opponent. Their next two WC triumphs came in 1997 and in 2005 when they beat the Kiwis and India in the finals respectively. The penultimate edition in 2013 was their sixth title as they thumped West Indies by 114 runs in the grand finale in India.
