Women’s World Cup 2022: ICC announces full list of fixtures

ICC

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday announced the full schedule for the Women’s World Cup 2022 in New Zealand. The Hagley Oval in Christchurch is set to host the final on April 3, 2022, under lights.

The mega event for Women’s Cricket kick starts on March 4 and will witness 31 matches across 31 action-packed days. This will be the first global event to be played in women’s cricket after the T20 World Cup earlier this year in Australia. The tournament was originally slated for February-March 2021 but was postponed to the following year. The ICC confirmed it has retained all the six host cities and venues for the 2022 edition.

“Happy to get back”: Mithali Raj

The Tauranga’s Bay Oval will host the opening match on March 4 featuring White Ferns – the New Zealand Women’s cricket team facing a qualifier. The same venue will also witness a bumper clash between England Women and India Women on March 16.

“We have all been through a very difficult year and are happy to be getting back at playing the game we all love. India has been doing very well at ICC tournaments in the past three or four years, whether you talk about the (ODI) World Cup or the recently concluded T20 World Cup.”

“If we manage to win the tournament in 2022, it will be a massive inspiration for the next generation of girls, as the fifty-over format, is considered the pinnacle for any cricketer. I can assure you the team and I are looking forward to it,” said Mithali Raj, captain of the Indian women’s team.

Hosts New Zealand, Australia, England, South Africa and India have all qualified for the World Cup. The remaining three teams will be added after the qualifying tournament takes place in June-July 2021 in Sri Lanka. The eight-team World Cup will follow the traditional round-robin format. All teams will face each other at least once and the top four teams will make it to the semi-finals.
