Women’s World Cup 2022 Final – AUS vs ENG Review

The ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 came to an end with Australia clinching the final win against England and lifting the World Cup. A combined effort from the top-order batters helped Australia put up the highest total in the history of the Women’s World Cup Finals. A magnificent 170 (138) by opener Alyssa Healy made her stand out in the game and become the highest run-scorer in the history of the World Cup finals, male or female.

Her opening stand of 160-runs with Rachel Haynes helped Australia score a total of 356 runs. The dropped catches by England cost them the game as they couldn’t restrict Australia from hitting. Healy scored her career-best score in the first inning as she hit the ball all around the stadium and took over the game by a storm.
England got their first breakthrough late in the 30th over, in the form of Haynes who fell for 68(93). It was skipper Beth Mooney who came to the rescue and scored a quick-fire 62(47). Winning the toss and electing to bowl first did not work in their favor as multiple faults by England helped Australia to get the upper hand in the game.
Australia defeated England by 71 wickets to become the World Champions

Coming into the chase, openers Tammy Beaumont and Danni Wyatt were dismissed in the first powerplay, courtesy of Megan Schutt. It was a big blow for the team as they lost their core early in the game. Skipper Heather Knight couldn’t handle the pressure and lost her wicket to Alana King in just the 15th over. It was Nat Sciver who steered the innings for her team and she went past the 100-run mark. She handled the pressure very well and became the anchor of her team. She performed the way no one could. The one difficulty that she faced was that she couldn’t stabilize a partnership with the player on the other end.

Even though England couldn’t defend their title, Sciver’s unbeaten knock of 148(121) won hearts. Scoring the third-highest knock by any individual in World Cup history, she made a mark. Australia bundled out England in the 44th over and went on to win the World Cup by 71 runs. Australia ended the tournament remaining undefeated throughout, bagging victory in all the nine games they played.

Top Performers

Alyssa Healy
Healy batted on another level on the day. She didn’t let any England bowler settle and accelerated a notch after getting to her century. During her record knock, Healy smashed 26 fours and at one stage, she was literally toying with the England bowling. She also crossed the 500-run mark in the tournament to become the first ever Woman cricketer to do so in the World Cup. Healy scored 170 off just 138 balls that set up the game for Australia.
Nat Sciver
England all-rounder Nat Sciver had hit a ton in the league game against Australia. She did it again in the steep chase in the final. Rather she was the only batter to take the fight to the eventual World Champions. Sciver kept England in the hunt until the last moment and if they had wickets in hand, the defending champions might have chased down the target. As for Sciver, she scored a valiant 148 off 121 deliveries with 15 fours and a six to her name.
