WI vs IND: Three most memorable tussles in Tests
India and West Indies have locked horns in a two-match Test series which began on July 12 in Dominica. The two teams have so far met each other in 99 matches where India have won 23 matches while West Indies have won 30 matches with 46 games ending in a draw. Out of the 24 Test series played between the two teams so far, 12 have been won by West Indies and India have emerged victorious on ten occasions.
However, India have had an upper hand over the Windies since 2002 as they have won the last eight series played between the sides. Let’s take a look at the top three most memorable Tests between the two teams:
3) 2nd Test, Port of Spain, April 2002
Following a draw in the first Test, India set a target of 313 in the fourth innings to the hosts. West Indies were cruising at one stage at 237/4 with well-set Chris Gayle batting on 52 and were just 76 runs away from win. However, they suffered a dramatic collapse and were bundled out for 275, handing India a victory by 37 runs. Despite India’s victory West Indies went on to win the third and fifth Test and won the series 2-1.
2) 3rd Test, Bridgetown, March 1997
After bundling out West Indies for 298 in the first innings, India managed to get a slender lead of 21 runs. The Sachin Tendulkar-led side further bundled out the opposition for 140 in the second innings and were set a modest target of 121 to win the Test. However, India were blown away by the fearsome pace attack of Sir Curtly Ambrose, Ian Bishop and Franklyn Rose and were bundled out for 81 losing the match by 38 runs. The game turned out to be the series-deciding as West Indies won the five-match series by 1-0.
1) 3rd Test, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, November 2011
Leading the series by 2-0, India had the perfect opportunity to whitewash West Indies as they were set a target of 243 on Day 5. The match went down to the last ball with India requiring two runs to win having two wickets in hand. Ravichandran Ashwin faced the final ball and unfortunately got run out while taking the second run. As a result, the game ended in a draw with the scores tied between the two teams and India having one wicket in hand.
