WI vs IND: 2nd Test – Bumrah runs through West Indies after Vihari, Ishant heroics
Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling masterclass late on day two of the second Test at Sabina Park, Jamaica left the home side in a precarious position. Bumrah became only the third Indian bowler to claim a Test hat-trick and ended the day with another five-wicket haul. Earlier Hanuma Viahri’s hundred and Ishant Sharma’s fifty had troubled West Indies. The hosts finished the calamitous day on 87/7 with none of the specialist batsmen surviving.

Vihari and Ishant frustrate West Indies
West Indies began promisingly on day two as Jason Holder removed Rishabh Pant on the first ball of the day. The beautiful inswinger that castled Pant completed Holder’s much-deserved five-wicket haul. Ravindra Jadeja fell after a 69-ball vigil for his 16 runs. This brought Ishant to the crease.
The tall-pacer, otherwise known for safeguarding an end, batted with freedom and dealt in boundaries. At one stage, he was batting on 31 runs from 39 balls. Vihari, batting at the other end, brought up his maiden Test century in his sixth appearance. The duo added 112 runs for the 8th wicket, half of which were scored by Ishant. He fell after his fifty while attempting a slog over mid-wicket.
Vihari was the last Indian batsman to be dismissed. India closed the first innings on 416 all out with the centurion scoring 111. Holder was the pick of the bowlers with 5/77. Debutant off-spinner Cornwall claimed 3/105.
Bumrah special
After six overs, the home team was 9/0. Bumrah changed his bowling end after two overs and began a fresh spell. The bowler in the form of his life removed John Campbell with an away swinging delivery. The next over was even more special.
Darren Bravo fell prey to another away moving delivery, KL Rahul at second slip pocketed the catch. On the next ball, Bumrah trapped Shamarh Brooks in front of the stump with a vicious in-swinger. The batsman reviewed it, only to give fans another opportunity to enjoy the dismissal. Roston Chase faced the hat-trick ball. Another incoming ball thudded into his pads but the bowler was not convinced. Captain Virat Kohli took an inspired review and voila! Three reds made Bumrah only the third Indian bowler to take a Test hat-trick!
Bumrah completed his five-wicket haul with the wicket of Kraigg Brathwaite, the West Indian opener. Shortly afterwards, the bowler complained of a calf-injury and walked off the pitch in agony. In his absence, Shimron Hetmyer decided to make the most of his fortunes. The left-hander attempted extravagant drives which evaded the fielders by a whisker. His 34 (57) ended with Mohammed Shami getting the better of him.

Returning to complete an enormously successful day, Bumrah sent back Holder on the first ball of his fresh spell. The captain played an ugly shot off a wayward short ball. Jahmar Hamilton and Rahkeem Cornwall ensured no further damage till the finish, although there was a lucky boundary through first slip and wicketkeeper for Cornwall on Bumrah’s bowling. India’s strike bowler ended the day with 9-3-16-6.
Brief scores:
India (H Vihari 111, V Kohli 76, I Sharma 57; Jason Holder 5-77) lead West Indies 87/7 (S Hetmyer 34; J Bumrah 6-16) by 329 runs.
