Where is it going wrong for the India women’s in white-ball games?
India Women recently lost the T20I and ODI series against England. They won one match each in both the limited-overs series. With the ODI World Cup scheduled for next year, the team must overcome its ongoing issues with performance. They lost both ODI and T20Is series against South Africa at home earlier this year. In this article, we will discuss what are the issues with the Indian team in white-ball games.
Middle-order woes
Indian openers have done quite well in the recent past in both the limited-overs format. Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma seem to be a permanent opening choice for a long time in the coming years. However, the real problem is with the inconsistent middle order. In the ODIs, only Mithali Raj has done well there, while in T20Is, Harmanpreet Kaur has played some good innings. It is important that the team management soon fixes the responsibilities for the batters in the middle order.
Pace attack issues
In the England tour, only Jhulan Goswami impressed with the ball in the ODIs. In the T20Is, Shikha Pandey took three wickets in the first game but went wicketless in the next two matches. These two pacers have not got good support from other pacers in the respective formats. India would be hoping to see their pacers back in form in the coming days.
Problems in setting a target
The Indian batters have done well while chasing the target but have failed to do so when batting first. In the last 6 ODIs when India Women batted first, it lost all the games. Therefore, a clear strategy must be devised for the batters on how to set a good total while batting first.
Batting style
One major reason India has failed to put up good totals while batting first is the batting approach. The Indian batters have been seen taking too long to accelerate the innings, and there have been many dot balls faced. The team management will need to think about the strike rate of batters as well.
