West Indies vs Bangladesh T20I series opener washed out due to rain
The first T20I between West Indies and Bangladesh in Dominica got washed out due to persistent rain. The visitors were embarrassed in the recently concluded Test series, and were looking for a comeback in the shortest format of the game but will have to wait for the second T20I to have a chance to redeem themselves. West Indies would feel hard done by the weather as they had the upper hand in the rain-hit encounter.
The hosts put Mahmudullah’s side into bat after winning the toss. Bangladesh were jolted early after losing opener Munim Shahriar in the first over of the innings. However, veteran Shakib-Al-Hasan looked in great touch and helped the visitors amass 46 runs in the powerplay. But Bangladesh’s hopes for a big score were dashed when Shakib was dismissed for a quickfire 29 off 15 deliveries.
The Bangla Tigers never recovered from that blow and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. It was only after a brief cameo by Nurul Hasan that Bangladesh breached the three-figure mark in the match. But as soon as the wicketkeeper-batter was dismissed, the rain gods decided to take matters into their own hands as Bangladesh’s innings was concluded after 13 overs at the score of 105/8.
There were hopes for a revised target for the Caribbean side once the rain eased out, but the ground was in tatters after the heavy downpour on the previous night and two lengthy rain interruptions during the match. Both sides will square up once again on Sunday, 3rd July for the second T20I of the three-match series.
Bangladeshi batters’ woeful run with the bat continues
The visitors were comprehensively defeated in the two Tests ahead of the T20I series as West Indies completed a whitewash in the red-ball series. The Bangladeshi batters were clueless against the Caribbean pace attack, especially Kemar Roach, and failed to breach the 250-run mark in their four outings.
Bangladesh’s top-order batters will have to pull up their socks in the upcoming fixtures if they are to have any chance to make a dent in the host’s impressive bowling lineup. West Indies, on the other hand, are favourites for the white-ball leg of the series as the hosts eye a clean sweep across all formats against the visitors.
