West Indies chief disappointed after team’s early exit in T20 WC
Cricket West Indies (CWI) president Ricky Skerritt on October 22 (Saturday) vowed that there would be “a thorough post-mortem” of the team’s “deeply disappointing” T20 World Cup exit. To note, the two-time champions got knocked out in First Round after suffering a loss against Ireland in Hobart on Friday, October 21.
Earlier in the competition, the Men in Maroon also received an embarrassing loss against Scotland. CWI president Skerritt said that he is deeply disappointed with the team’s performance in the competition.
The ongoing inability of our batsmen to prevail over opposing slow bowling continued to be an obvious weakness in Australia: CWI president Skerritt
“A thorough post-mortem will be carried out on all aspects of our World Cup preparation and performance. I am deeply disappointed with the performance results of our team in Australia and I appreciate the sense of utter frustration that is being experienced by many,” Skerritt said in a statement.
“The ongoing inability of our batsmen to prevail over opposing slow bowling continued to be an obvious weakness in Australia,” he said. “Ultimately, shot selections seem to be deeply embedded in the T20 batting culture of our senior team.”
In their tournament opener against Scotland, the former T20 champions were bowled out for 118 chasing 161 to win, but they recovered to beat Zimbabwe. However, Ireland completed an easy victory over the West Indies after a match-winning performance was given by Paul Stirling and Gareth Delany on Friday.
They (the Windies) came to Australia with a new-look team led by Nicholas Pooran after the likes of Dwayne Bravo, and Kieron Pollard retired, and Andre Russell and Sunil Narine were overlooked.
“Solutions will be found in keeping with CWI’s strategy to improve the quality and sustainability of cricket on all fronts and in all formats,” Skerritt added. “West Indies cricket is bigger than any one individual or event and continues to need the input and support of all stakeholders.”
