WATCH: Steve Smith pulls off one-handed stunner in County Championship
Steve Smith is representing Sussex in England’s domestic cricket County Championship Divison Two in preparation for the ICC World Test Championship final (WTC) and the Ashes this year. The WTC final will be played between India and Australia at The Oval, London from June 7 while the Ashes will get underway from June 16 in England.
Smith, a batting maestro, and a world-class fielder, hit the headlines as he pulled off a stunning one-handed catch during the ongoing County Championship Division Two match between Sussex and Leicestershire. The 33-year-old pulled off the catch to dismiss Leicestershire allrounder, Rehan Ahmed. However, the Australian is yet to contribute with the bat, having only scored 30 and three runs in two innings thus far.
Leicestershire were asked to follow on after being bowled out for 270 in their reply to Sussex’s first innings total of 430. Leicestershire were in trouble at 65/4 but recovered to hold on to a draw when Wiaan Mulder and Rishi Patel both hit centuries to help them reach 295/6.
Meanwhile, after scoring nine runs, Rehan edged one off pacer Henry Crocombe towards the right of Smith, who was standing at second slip. The Australian flew to his right and one-handedly picked the catch and ended Rehan’s stay.
