Washington Sundar set to join Indian squad ahead of Asia Cup final
Washington Sundar, the talented 23-year-old off-spin all-rounder, is all set to join the Indian squad in Colombo for the much-anticipated Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka.
Sundar’s inclusion comes as a precautionary measure due to concerns over the fitness of Axar Patel, who sustained a minor injury during the Super Four match against Bangladesh and may be forced to sit out the final clash.
As fans know, Sundar has been included in India’s Asian Games squad and is presently in Bengaluru. However, his journey with the Indian cricket team will be temporary, as he is expected to rejoin the Asian Games squad once the Asia Cup final concludes.
Sundar, a seasoned player known for his off-spin bowling and left-handed batting, last donned the Indian jersey in an ODI match at home against New Zealand in January this year. Despite his consistent performances, he narrowly missed out on a spot in the provisional 15-man World Cup squad.
Should Sundar get the nod for the final, his off-spin bowling skills could prove to be invaluable, particularly against Sri Lanka’s left-handed batters. Colombo’s pitch conditions have been known to favor spinners, adding to the anticipation surrounding Sundar’s potential inclusion.
Sundar’s inclusion as cover showcases the Indian team’s commitment to leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of victory. With the Asia Cup final just around the corner, cricket fans across the globe are eagerly awaiting the clash between these two cricketing giants of Asia.
Following the conclusion of the Asia Cup 2023 finals, India are set to face Australia in a three-match ODI series starting on September 22. After the three-match ODI series, the highly anticipated ODI World Cup 2023 is slated to commence on October 5. The opening match of the prestigious tournament will feature the finalists of the previous edition, England and New Zealand.
