Varun Chakravarthy is my number one spinner for T20 WC: Deep Dasgupta
Cricketer-turned-expert Deep Dasgupta is mighty impressed with India and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spinner Varun Chakravarthy and feels he should be the first-choice slow bowler for the team during the team’s upcoming T20 World Cup. The mystery spinner was again in his element in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) as he picked up two wickets for just 26 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
Chakravarthy has been stupendous for KKR this season as he has so far picked 15 wickets in 13 matches in IPL 2021. He has also maintained tight lines and lengths and has conceded runs at only 6.73. His smart variations coupled with an unorthodox action has been quite hard to get by for the teams. It is because of his mystery element and X factor ability that Chakravarthy has been selected in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup.
Dasgupta analyzed his performances for KKR and believes on current form, the mystery spinner should guarantee a spot in the playing XI for India.
“For me, if you are picking one spinner apart from (Ravindra) Jadeja, who will play as an all-rounder, my number one spinner at this point in time is Varun Chakravarthy,” the former cricketer said during a discussion on ESPN Cricinfo.
Fitness is my only concern regarding Varun Chakravarthy: Deep Dasgupta
Varun Chakravarthy is one of five spinners in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup. However, his fitness is a bit of concern as he has been out of the team due to shoulder and knee issues. Dasgupta feels that fitness is one of the factors that might be a hindrance for the 30-year-old in the longer run.
“My only concern is his fitness. He has struggled in the last six-eight months with his fitness – knee, shoulder. I just hope he is fit enough and raring to go. But at this point of time, he is my first spinner to go on that list,” he admitted.
Speaking about the match, KKR beat SRH by six wickets with two balls to spare. Apart from Chakravarthy, even Tim Southee and Shivam Mavi too picked up two wickets each and restricted SRH to 115. With this win, KKR are placed fourth on the points table with 12 points.
