U19 WC 2022: IND vs SA Review – Indian youngsters make a winning start
India kickstarted their Under-19 World Cup campaign on a victorious note by handing a 45-run defeat to South Africa. On the back of Yash Dhull’s captain’s knock of 82, India mistered 232 in 46.5 overs after being inserted to bat.
Although the score looked a tad undercooked at the halfway mark, Vicky Ostwal and Raja Bawa ran riot, scalping nine wickets between them to restrict South Africa for just 187. For the Proteas, Dewald Brevis notched up a fighting half-century, but his 65 off 99 did not have much support around, with only three other batters apart from him managing a double-digit score.
For India, Otswal was the pick of the bowlers for his incredible spell of 5/28, but thanks was due also to follow left-arm spinner Nishant Sandhu, who gave only 22 runs, including a maiden in his quota of 10 overs. Bawa’s medium pace reaped India rewards too, with him returning 4/47.

Top performers
Yash Dhull
Dhull’s knock was the backbone of India’s total of 232 after they were rocked early. After being reduced to 82/3, he notched up stands of 71, 44, 33 and 37 for wickets No. 3-6 alongside the middle-order to give his bowlers a total to bowl at. He struck 11 fours in his 100-ball knock for 82 runs.
Vicky Ostwal
The left-arm spinner stole the show with the ball, nipping out five wickets in an economical spell to claim the Player of the Match award. He played a crucial role in not letting South Africa drive the early advantage, as India inflicted a collapse.
What next for the teams?
India will next play Ireland on 19th January, while South Africa will face Uganda a day before.
