“U-turn on my selection despite clearing Yo-Yo test”: Yuvraj Singh lashes out
Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has lashed out at the Indian team management for his selection snub in 2017 despite him clearing the yo-yo test. Earlier this year, the 37-year-old called time on his international career to play T20 league cricket.
Yuvraj – India’s World Cup-winner
Yuvraj played a crucial role in India’s 2007 World T20 triumph and the 2011 ODI World Cup with match-winning performances. He was also part of the Indian side that played the 2017 Champions Trophy, where he managed to average 35. His decent performances earned him a call-up to the 2017 West Indies tour but he was consequently dropped after a miserable Caribbean outing.
The southpaw said he wasn’t informed about his exclusion and that he was disappointed with a similar treatment being meted out to his teammates Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan.
“I got injured and I was told to prepare for the Sri Lanka series. Then suddenly, the yo-yo test came into the picture. It was a u-turn in my selection. Suddenly I had to go back and prepare for the yo-yo test at the age of 36. Even after I cleared the yo-yo test, I was told to play domestic cricket,” he added.
Yo-Yo test just an excuse: Yuvraj
Yuvraj further stated that the yo-yo test was nothing but an excuse to drop senior players like him.
“They actually thought that I wouldn’t be able to clear the test due to my age. And that it would be easy to decline me afterwards…yeah you can say it was an exercise in making excuses,” he added.
The former cricketer said that the team management should sit down and talk to the players they’re looking to drop and give them proper reasoning. He also said that although it did bother him initially, he has now made peace with it.
“I have seen it happen to big names. Took it personally then but not now as there is a time for everything to move on and I have made my peace with it,” he concluded.
An explosive batsman and a handy spin bowler, Yuvraj represented India in 304 ODIs and 58 T20Is. Among his many notable contributions to Indian cricket, he is most remembered for hitting six sixes off a Stuart Broad over in the 2007 World T20.
