Travis Head ruled out of first half of ODI World Cup 2023
In a significant blow to Australia’s ODI World Cup campaign, star opener Travis Head has been ruled out of action for the first half of the tournament. The team’s coach, Andrew McDonald, confirmed the news following Head’s unfortunate finger injury. Known for his prolific batting prowess, Head’s absence leaves a void at the top of the order for the Aussies.
In the absence of Head, Marsh stepped up to open the innings in the final ODI match against South Africa. Notably, the team has the option of Cameron Green as an alternative opener. Many acknowledge that they will sorely miss Head’s explosive batting style. Head was forced to retire hurt vs South Africa after taking a painful blow to his hand from Gerald Coetzee.
The good news is that he doesn’t require surgery at the moment: Coach Andrew McDonald
“The timeframe is still a little bit loose at the moment, But the good news is that he doesn’t require surgery as it sits at the moment. The follow-up scan confirmed the fracture was in a joint. There will be an extended period of time out and we’re just going to weigh whether that time falls potentially with an option to carry him through the front half of the World Cup,” McDonald said in a Press conference as reported by India Today.
Travis Head is heading home for medical examinations, and the Australian squad is preparing to travel from South Africa to India. The Kangaroos will play a crucial three-match series scheduled from September 22nd to 27th. This series serves as a vital tune-up for Australia in preparation for the 50-over World Cup. The absence of Travis Head will undoubtedly pose a challenge for the team. Australia aim to stake their claim as serious contenders for the coveted ODI World Cup trophy.
