Top five 10th wicket partnerships in IPL
In the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) numerous match-deciding partnerships have been witnessed over the years. However, there have been several instances in the biggest cricketing league in the world, when the tail-enders have woken up their inner batter and scored runs. Here’s a look at the top five partnerships for the 10th wicket in IPL.
5. Murali Karthik and Ishant Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja and Ben Laughlin (25 runs)
KKR batters Murali Karthik (21 off 20 balls) and Ishant Sharma (6 off 15) were involved in a 25-run partnership against Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2010. Similarly, Ravindra Jadeja and Ben Laughlin also stitched a 25-run partnership when CSK took on MI in IPL 2013. CSK lost the contest by 60 runs.
4. MS Dhoni and Mohit Sharma (26 runs)
Chennai Super Kings were down and out against Mumbai Indians in the final match of IPL 2013. Chasing a target of 149, none of the CSK batters except skipper MS Dhoni (63* off 45 balls) got going for the Yellow Army. Dhoni stitched a tenth-wicket partnership of 26 runs with Mohit Sharma. However, Sharma only faced two balls during that partnership, as Dhoni scored all the 26 runs.
3. Umesh Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy (27 runs)
Pacer Umesh Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy were involved in a 27-run partnership for the tenth wicket against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2022. The partnership almost proved to be a match-winning one as RCB managed to chase down the target in last over of the match. Both Umesh and Varun took KKR score from 101/9 to 128 before Umesh cleaned up by pacer Akash Deep.
2. Munaf Patel and Siddharth Trivedi, Andre Russell and Harry Gurney (29 runs)
Delhi Daredevils were up against Rajasthan Royals at Bloemfontein in IPL 2009. Batting first the Daredevils scored 150/3 in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, Rajasthan were reduced to 107/9 in 17 overs. However, Munaf Patel and Siddharth Trivedi were at the crease and the duo made a partnership of 29 in the final three overs to make sure the RR innings lasted the entire 20 overs. Similarly, Andre Russell and Harry Gurney have also stitched a partnership of 29 runs. Their partnership came against Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2019.
1. Tom Curran and Ankit Rajpoot (31 runs)
Kolkata Knight Riders were taking on Rajasthan Royals in a group-stage match of IPL 2020. Batting first, KKR scored an above-par score of 174 runs in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, the Royals’ top order could not get going. It was English allrounder Tom Curran (54 off 36 balls) who stitched a partnership with tail-ender Ankit Rajpoot (7 off 5 balls) to ensure that the Royals play out their 20 overs. The duo stitched a partnership of 31 runs for the 10th wicket and hold the record for the highest run partnership for that wicket.
