Test cricket is the most traditional and the toughest format that demands a lot of dedication, patience, endurance and a hunger to excel. When it comes to batting, this format has seen many etch their names in cricketing history along with several records that remain unbroken to date.

There are some batters in the modern era who have shown an excellent commitment in the longest format and have also reaped fruits for their hard work. Without further ado, here’s a look at five of them.

Kane Williamson:  Kane Williamson is arguably New Zealand’s best Test captain having led them to a historic triumph in the inaugural edition of the ICC World Test Championship last year. David Warner: While David Warner is one of Australia’s high-profile limited-overs batters, he has been an impactful Test player as well with a triple century to his name. Warner has scored 7652 runs from 92 games averaging 47.40 that include 24 hundreds and 32 fifties with his highest individual score being an unbeaten 335 against Pakistan in 2019.

Steve Smith: Having started his cricketing career as a leg-spinner, Steve Smith has gone on to establish himself as arguably the best Test batter of this era with many consistent performances. In his 83 appearances, Smith has managed to score 7862 runs averaging 59.87 including 27 tons and 33 50s with his highest score being 239.

Virat Kohli: Virat Kohli occupies the second position on this list having breached the 8000-run mark in Test cricket in the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka. The batting megastar in his 100 outings has amassed 8007 runs averaging 50.35 that include 27 centuries and 28 half-centuries with an unbeaten 254 being his highest individual score.

Joe Root: Joe Root takes the ‘Numero Uno’ spot in this list. He was the highest run-getter in red-ball cricket last year with 1708 runs under his belt from 15 games that included six tons. The England Test skipper has so far scored 9613 runs from 114 matches at an average of 49.23 including 23 hundreds and 53 fifties. Meanwhile, his highest individual score in this format is 254.
