Tim David is the sort of player that could actually win you World Cup: Ricky Ponting
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting reckons that Tim David is a player who can win Australia a World Cup. He said that the Singapore-born batter reminds him of his former Australian teammate Andrew Symonds. Ponting said that if he were the selector, he would have David in his team.
The former Australian captain believes that David, with the sort of striking ability that he has, is a match-winner. Ponting opined that if David is given an opportunity, he has the chance of winning the team the T20 World Cup. The 47-year-old feels that none in the current Australian squad boasts a resume as good as David’s over the last two years.
“If I was a selector, I would love to have someone like that in my team,” Ponting was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “If he’s playing or not, just to have that sort of striking power ability around, he’s an out and out match-winner.”
Tim David is not just the average run-of-the-mill guy: Ricky Ponting
“He’s the sort of player that could actually win you a World Cup. He’s not just the average run-of-the-mill guy that might just sneak into a squad. I mean, he actually reminds me a bit of someone like an Andrew Symonds back in the 2003 World Cup.”
“You know if you get them in and you give him an opportunity they’re a chance of winning a tournament for you,“ added Ponting. “That’s how I’d be looking at him right now. I know there are some other great world-quality players in the middle order for Australia. But probably none of them boasts the resume as good as Tim’s over the last two years.”
The T20 World Cup 2022 is set to begin on October 16 in Australia. The Super 12 will commence on October 22, and the finals will take place on November 13 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Australia are one of the direct qualifiers for Super 12 and have England, New Zealand and Afghanistan in the pool. The other pool comprises Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and South Africa.
