Three captains who can be bought in the mega auction

David Warner

With only four more days to the auction, all the teams will be finalizing their auction strategies and looking forward to adding new faces to their respective squads.  While a few players were retained by the already existing franchises, The new ones- Lucknow and Ahmedabad picked 3 players each from the draft.

With 590 players all set to go under the hammer this time, with the highest base price being INR 2 Crore, the teams will be looking forward to building a strong team for the upcoming IPL season. While some teams will be adding more players, a few of them will be looking forward to find their next skipper in the auction.

Here we’ll take a look at a few names who could be potential captaincy material.

David Warner

The pocket dynamo from Australia will be a hot pick in the upcoming mega auction. The 35-year-old, in 150 appearances in IPL, has scored 5449 runs, the most ever by any overseas player, at 41.59 and with a strike rate of 139.96.

His tally includes four centuries, the second-most by any player in IPL after Virat Kohli (5), and 54 half-century-plus scores, the most ever by a batsman. The left-handed-batter lead SRH to their first-ever title in 2016. He was stripped off his captaincy and dropped from the team last year following a below-par season, prompting the southpaw to put his name in the auction.

Shreyas Iyer

The man responsible for turning around the rebranded Delhi franchise’s fortunes, Shreyas has played 87 matches in the IPL scoring 2375 runs with a strike rate of 123.95, along with 16 fifty-plus scores. Having led Delhi twice into playoffs, the sides looking for a new skipper will be looking forward to acquiring him in the auction.

Steve Smith

Former Australian skipper Steve Smith might not have had a great stint as a captain with the Rajasthan Royals, but he is surely one of the players that teams will keep an eye on given his experience leading the Australian side across all formats. Across all the editions of IPL that Smith has featured in so far, he has played 81 matches and scored 2,022 runs at an average of 37.44 and a strike rate of 128.95. He has a century and eight half-centuries against his name, and his best score has been 101.
