Walsh

West Indies right-arm quick Courtney Walsh was one of the kind as despite having spectacular numbers under his belt, he is more fondly remembered for the spirit with which he played the game. Walsh has been probably one of the unsung heroes of the West Indian pace attack which went on to make their mark from the late 1970s to the 2000s.

Walsh was the first among his predecessors or legendary contemporaries to reach the illustrious mark of scalping 500 wickets in the longest format of the game. He turned out to be the most successful fast bowlers of all time with a whopping 519 wickets under his belt at the end of his career in 132 games at an average of 24.4 and economy of 2.53. Courtney also bowled more than 5000 overs in Test cricket and holds the record for most balls bowled by a fast bowler in the history of Test cricket — 30,019.

He also has the record of picking 5 wickets in an innings for more than 100 times in 429 first-class matches he played. As far as ODIs are concerned, Walsh has 227 scalps to his name in 205 One Day Internationals at an average of 30.5 and an economy rate of 3.83.

While Walsh is renowned as one of the most dangerous seamers of all time especially in the purest format of the game, he couldn’t weave the same magic with the willow despite batting in 185 innings. Walsh’s stint with the bat was that of a legend but for all the wrong reasons.

The 58-year-old  holds the record for the most number of ducks in Test cricket- 43. In 185 Test innings, he has scored just 936 runs at a poor average of 7.5 and strike rate of 44.8. Yet there is one remarkable record that Walsh holds as a batsman which no legendary batsman has been able to achieve thus far. Courtney Walsh has the record for the most number of not-outs in Test cricket – 61.
