There’s no way I’d say we’re behind India and England in terms of talent: Justin Langer
It has been in talks for quite a long time that Australia are lagging behind their competitors India and England in terms of depth. However, Australia coach Justin Langer stated it is certainly not the case with their team but they have really got a perspective after losing the T20I series to West Indies 1-4. Langer added that his men hadn’t played cricket for a long time and that is why they struggled in the Caribbean.
If talking of depth, it has to be noted that England was up against Pakistan with their B side and whitewashed them in the ODI series and further went on to win the T20I series. India on the other hand are playing without the services of their Test players and won the ODI series against Sri Lanka.
In the same light, Langer added that their men lacked some cricket off late whereas West Indies were up after playing against South Africa. However, he completely brushed off the fact that Australians lack any depth when compared to their counterparts, India and England. Langer also added that when it comes to selection in the Australia team, there are a lot of players for a spot which is really a positive sign for them.
Our guys hadn’t played any cricket for three months: Justin Langer
“I came out of the T20 series with some real perspective. Our guys hadn’t played any cricket for three months and it’s so hard to come off no cricket – you can have as many nets as you like, you can have practice games, but you can’t (simulate match practice). The West Indies had come off a series against South Africa, they were a bit more battle-hardened. I thought there were some really good signs, we were close in that series, we were close in that first (T20I). There was some really good signs coming out of that I thought,” said Langer while speaking to cricket.com.au.
“There’s no way I’d say we’re behind India and England in terms of talent. We’ve just got to get them some experience,” Langer concluded.
