The numbers game: Here’s what current Indian batting line-up averages in England
India are slated to face New Zealand in the World Test Championship final which begins on 18th June. They will also be playing a five-match Test series against England following the iconic clash. The visitors have named their 15-man squad for the WTC final at The Rose Bowl, Southampton. Here’s how each Indian batsman in the current setup fares in the English conditions.
Rohit Sharma – 17.00
The ODI legend has played only one Test in England, it was also in Southampton. In the 2014 tour, Rohit batted at number six in his only Test in England. He scored 34 runs in two innings.
Shubman Gill – Yet to play
Cheteshwar Pujara – 29.41
In nine appearances, Pujara has amassed 500 runs at a decent average of 29.41. His only century on the English soil came up at Southampton where he scored an unbeaten 132. Pujara also has two fifties in England.
Virat Kohli – 36.35
Kohli had very contrasting tours of England. He had a miserable outing in 2014 where he totalled only 134 runs in five Tests. The tour scarred him and raised questions about his batting ability. He then made a spectacular return in 2018 where he scored 500-plus runs in the series. His average is now around 36 and has two centuries to his name.
Ajinkya Rahane – 29.26
Rahane is known for his solid batting contributions in difficult conditions. He has not shined brightly yet he has contributed from time to time. In 10 Test matches, he has totalled 556 runs. He has contributed more than 250 runs in both his tours thus far. In 2014, he struck a century at the Lord’s.
Hanuma Vihari – 28.00
Vihari has also played only one Test in England thus far. This was at The Oval. He scored 56 in the first innings and then fell for zero.
Rishabh Pant – 27.00
Pant became the first Indian wicketkeeper to score a Test century in England when he struck 114 at The Oval in 2018. But apart from that one knock, he has failed to pass the 25-run barrier in the remaining five innings.
Ravindra Jadeja – 30.66
With a healthy average for someone batting in the lower middle order, Jadeja has put up fighting performances in England. He has gotten into double figures seven times out of 10 innings. He has struck two half-centuries in the English conditions.
