Teams with the most wins in T20I cricket
The dominance of the West Indies team in the early 70s and 80s followed by Australia’s belligerence for more than a decade from the late 90s to the 2000s is well documented. But the emergence of T20I cricket has created an imbalance that rarely sees a side dominate for long periods. Six different winners in the seven editions of the T20 World Cup is a testament to that. Since it’s tough to distinguish teams based on silverware, we rank the teams with the most wins in this format of the game.
3. South Africa – 88 wins
One of cricket’s biggest tragedies has been the lack of international success for the South African team. That misfortune has continued in the shortest format of the game as well with the side’s best performance in the T20 format coming when they made it to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in 2009 and 2014. The Proteas are one of the strongest limited-overs sides and have amassed 88 wins in 149 matches with a win percentage of 59.12.
2.India – 104 wins
India won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007 but has failed to replicate that glory ever since. They reached the final in 2014 and the semi-final in 2016, but on both occasions, ended up on the losing side. The Men in Blue possess one of the most talented groups of players with names like Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammad Shami, regarded as the best players in their position. The Indian team has recorded 101 wins in 161 matches at an impressive win rate of 65.28.
1. Pakistan- 118 wins
The 2009 T20 World Cup winners are at the top when it comes to the number of wins in T20 cricket. The Men in Green have failed to replace iconic figures of Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik, but the emergence of Babar Azam in recent times has galvanized their side into an unstoppable force. The Pakistani team suffered a heartbreaking defeat against the eventual champions, Australia, in the semi-finals of last year’s T20 World Cup. Pakistan has totaled 118 wins in 190 outings with a win ratio of 64.05.
