T20 World Cup 2021: Day 3 Review – Scotland beat PNG, Bangladesh survive against Oman
The third day of the ongoing T20 World Cup saw Scotland face Papua New Guinea in the afternoon game. The day ended with Bangladesh locking horns against the hosts Oman in a must-win encounter.
Here’s what transpired on the 3rd day of the global tournament:
Scotland strengthens their qualification bid after beating a spirited PNG side
Scotland opted to bat first after winning the toss. But the PNG bowlers did well to remove their openers early. Both Munsey and Coetzer were back in the hut with only 26 runs on the board. This is when the duo of Matthew Cross and Richie Berrington joined hands to add 92 runs for the fourth wicket.
They took calculated risks after rebuilding the innings and put the team in a very good position to launch for the death overs. Simon Atai dismissed Cross at the perfect time but Berrington continued to do well and smashed 70 off just 49 balls. Scotland lost six wickets in the last two overs scoring only 14 runs thanks to some good comeback from PNG bowlers.

Eventually, Scotland ended at 165/9 in their 20 overs with Kabua Morea and Chad Soper sharing seven wickets between them. In response, PNG found themselves struggling at 35/5 inside the powerplay overs and many felt they would get bundled out early. But they are known to put up a fight and Norman Vanua, along with Sese Bau did just that.
Vanua scored 47 runs to threaten Scotland at one stage but PNG didn’t have many specialist batters to come in the end. In the end, they could only reach 148 runs, losing the game by 17 runs.
Bangladesh stay alive with a thumping win over Oman
Bangladesh opted to bat first after winning the toss but they struggled in the first half of their innings. It seemed as if Oman would restrict them to a gettable total. But Shakib Al Hasan and Naim Sheikh batted superbly after surviving the early phase. Oman also dropped three catches which let Bangladesh off the hook.

Naim, playing his first World Cup match, smashed a brilliant half-century scoring 64 runs while Shakib did well during his 42-run stay in the middle. Bangladesh didn’t get the expected finishing kick but they managed to cross the 150-run mark. Eventually, they posted 153 runs in their 20 overs.
Oman began their response well taking the attack to Bangladesh bowlers in the powerplay. Though they lost Aqib Ilyas and Kashyap Prajapati, Oman had reached close to 50 in the powerplay. Jatinder Singh, the other opener, kept his team in the hunt 11 overs into the chase.
But his wicket triggered a collapse and Oman could never recover. Bangladesh tightened the screws in the last nine overs as the hosts could only reach 127 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their 20 overs.
