It’s the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2021 and Australia are the new champions! The Men in Yellow defeated their Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand by eight wickets in the finals to get the glory. It was indeed a thrilling competition as some fascinating contest was witnessed between the bat and the ball. Also, many games went down to the wire that entertained the fans thoroughly.

Several expectations were also defied as neither Australia nor New Zealand were backed to go a long way at the start of the competition. Team India’s early exit was another shock in the competition. This shows how certain the T20 format is. Meanwhile, the global competition also saw many records being made and thrashed.

Let’s look at the records created and broken during the course of T20 World Cup 2021:-

5) Most T20I wickets in a calendar year

Hasaranga

Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga and South Africa’s Tabraiz Shamsi were on a roll in the competition. With 36 scalps apiece, they now jointly hold the record of taking most T20I wickets in a calendar year. Andrew Tye, with 31 wickets in 2018, held the record before the tournament.

4) Most T20 runs in a calendar year

2021 has been a year to remember for Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam. The duo scored consistently and took Pakistan to numerous wins. They showcased their blitzes in the T20 World Cup 2021. In the process, Rizwan overtook Chris Gayle’s tally of 1665 runs in 2015 and became the player with most T20 runs in a calendar year. While the wicketkeeper currently has 1743 runs under his belt, Azam holds the second position with 1666 runs.

3) Most runs by a captain in T20 World Cup

As mentioned above, Babar Azam was on a roll the tournament. In fact, he finished as the highest run-getter with 302 runs in six games. While Azam is the fourth player overall to score over 300 runs in a T20 World Cup edition, he’s the first captain to get the landmark.

2) Most runs in a T20 World Cup final

Kane Williamson blew hot and cold throughout the tournament but he stepped up in the all-important final clash against Australia. He scored 85 runs in the game, the joint-highest for a player in a T20 World Cup final. West Indies’ Marlon Samuels scored as many runs in the summit clash of the 2016 event.

1) Most wickets in T20 World Cups

Although Bangladesh couldn’t impress much in the tournament, their star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan scripted the record books. He went past Shahid Afridi’s tally of 39 scalps and became the highest wicket-taker in T20 World Cups. The left-arm spinner currently has 41 wickets in the tournament.
