T20 Blast 2022: Samit Patel and Carlos Brathwaite retire out in the same match
England’s premier domestic competition T20 Blast is currently in progress and the tournament witnessed a unique incident taking place on Sunday (June 5). In the game between Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire, Carlos Brathwaite and Samit Patel got retired out at crucial junctures. It was an 8-over per side encounter due to rain and the duo took the tactical decision for the team. Not long ago, Ravi Ashwin set the precedence while playing for the Rajasthan Royals in the recently concluded edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Brathwaite was the man first to retire himself out after Warwickshire were put in to bat first. He was batting well on 17 off 11 deliveries before walking back to the dugout before the start of the final over. Sam Hain replaced him in the middle but didn’t get to face even a single delivery. Alex Davies smashed 14 off four balls to take his team to a decent score of 98/5 in their 8 overs.
The next instance happened at a very interesting point of the match. Samit Patel, playing for Nottinghamshire, came out to bat in the final over after Daniel Christian was dismissed. But after scoring only two runs off a couple of deliveries, he retired himself out just before the last ball of the match with his team needing three runs off the final ball. It seemed a tactical decision in terms of running fast in order to tie the game with Calvin Harrison replacing him in the middle.
Warwickshire win the thriller by 1 run
As far as the match is concerned, Warwickshire successfully defended 98 runs winning the thrilling game by one run. After Samit Patel got retired out, the Nottinghamshire needed three runs off the final ball and it was a free hit as well with the previous delivery being a no-ball. Tom Moores faced the last delivery from Craig Miles who wasn’t having a great day. However, he managed to pull off a brilliant one conceding only a single and helping the team win by just one run.
