Sussex Cricket announces re-signing of Cheteshwar Pujara for 2023 season
The county club Sussex Cricket has officially announced that they have re-signed senior India batter Cheteshwar Pujara for the 2023 season. The designated Test batter was outstanding in the first season that he played even though the south coast side failed to make an impact collectively.
Pujara was a consistent performer for Sussex in the 2022 season and impressed one and all with his batting exploits in the 2022 edition of the County Championships as well as the Royal London One Day Cup and therefore, it was a no-brainer that Sussex Cricket had no second thoughts about giving him a contract extension.
Sussex Cricket retains Cheteshwar Pujara
After re-signing Cheteshwar Pujara for the 2023 season, Sussex Performance Director, Keith Greenfield called him a ‘class role model’ for their dressing room to follow.
“It is fantastic news that Cheteshwar will be returning in 2023, we all saw the class he showed with the bat and his performances, but he was also outstanding in our young dressing room as a world class role model for them to follow,” said Greenfield as quoted by their official website.
Meanwhile, Pujara himself expressed gratitude to the county club on being retained for the next season and said that he is looking forward to contributing to the team’s growth and success in 2023.
“I am glad to be back with Sussex for the 2023 season. I thoroughly enjoyed my last stint with the club last season, both on and off the field and I’m looking forward to contributing to the team’s growth and success in the coming year.”
The Gujarat-born cricketer had an outstanding run in the County Championship 2022 where he amassed over 1000 runs averaging 109.4 that included a record-shattering three double centuries.
Pujara also continued his splendid form in the Royal London Cup tournament where he scored a blistering 174 runs off 131 deliveries against Surrey. Moreover, he was also given the captaincy responsibilities in the absence of the injured Tom Haines. He brilliantly led Sussex from the front as they made it to the semi-finals of the 50-over competition.
