Sunil Gavaskar criticises Sanju Samson for his inconsistency in IPL 2021
Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian cricketer, said that Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) skipper Sanju Samson, somehow, has found ways of getting out in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The right-hander started with a knock of 119 against KL Rahul’s Punjab Kings (PBKS), but from there on, he has scored 26 runs in three games at a disastrous average of 8.67.
In RR’s previous game against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Thursday, April 22, Samson scored 21 runs with two fours and a six. Just when he was looking set, he gave a simple catch to Glenn Maxwell at midwicket, giving Washington Sundar a wicket.
The 71-year-old Gavaskar was clear cut in saying that Samson needs to shoulder a bit more responsibility and lead from the front. The veteran stated that due to lack of consistency, Samson has strained to break into the Indian team.
The captain has to stand up and deliver: Sunil Gavaskar
“He (Samson) seems to be in a rush all the time. Look at the way he finds ways of getting out. The man’s got all the talent in the world. If he just plays proper cricketing shots, he will be fine,” Gavaskar told on Star Sports.
“The captain has to stand up and deliver. He did it in the first game but that has been the problem with him. One of the reasons why he has not been featuring in the Indian team is that he scores runs in one game and then he looks to do it and carry on as if he’s batting in the next game from the same game, and that’s how he keeps getting out,” he added.
In the last match, the Royals lost to the Challengers by 10 wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. RCB chased 178 down with 21 balls to spare courtesy of Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 47-ball 72 and Devdutt Padikkal’s maiden IPL century.
After the loss, Samson talked about eradicating the chinks in RR’s armour going deep into the tournament.
“We need to go back and do some homework. We need to be honest with ourselves and come back better,” Samson was quoted as saying.
