Sunil Gavaskar backs Dinesh Karthik to make India comeback

Sunil Gavaskar feels that Dinesh Karthik can be a part of India’s squad in the upcoming T20 World Cup, and play the finisher’s role with perfection. Karthik has been impressive with the bat in the ongoing IPL 2022, and the 36-year-old wishes to play for his country to help the team win the World Cup this year.

Karthik has been the most consistent player for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the current edition of the cash-rich event. Having played six games so far, he has managed to remain unbeaten on five occasions and his strike rate accounts for 209.57 as his scores this season read 32*(14), 14*(7), 44*(23), 7*(2), 34(14), 66*(34).

He’s just changing the complexion of the game with his performance: Sunil Gavaskar

Karthik’s highest score of this season, so far, has come against the Delhi Capitals as he remained unbeaten on 66*(34) and helped his team post a  big total. He was named the Player of the Match for his prolific knock as RCB restricted DC during the chase and won the game by 16 runs.

“He said he wants to be a part of the Indian Team for the T20 World Cup. So what I am saying is don’t look at his age, just look at what he’s producing,” Gavaskar told Star Sports. “He’s just changing the complexion of the game with his performance. He’s doing it for his team. He’s doing the job that you can expect him to do at number 6 or 7 at the (T20) World Cup (in October-November).

Dinesh Karthik was last seen in India colors during the 2019 ODI World Cup in the semi-finals against New Zealand. He was not included in the T20 World Cup squad last year, and as a result, he went on to take on the mic in the commentary box as he enjoyed being on the panel alongside Gavaskar. Followed by his first stint as a commentator, he was also a part of the panel during the first season of The Hundred, a one-of-a-kind cricketing event that started last year.
