Strike-rate is overrated, it’s all about adapting to certain situation: Shubman Gill
India’s upcoming cricketer Shubman Gill will be seen in action for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 14th edition of the IPL. Ahead of the tournament, Gill opened up on the importance of strike rate in limited-overs cricket.
According to Gill, the concept of strike rate is overrated. Adding that the key is to adapt to a certain situation, Gill asserted that if the team situation is such that a batsman should play with a strike rate of 200, he should be able to do so, and if the situation is such that a batsman should play at a strike rate of 100, then he should be able to do that as well.
The KKR batsman also opined that there should not be a pattern in the way a batsman approaches his game and a willow wielder should be able to play according to the situation.
“I think strike-rate is kind of overrated. It’s all about how you adapt to a certain situation. If the team demands you to play with a strike rate of 200 you should be able to do it. If the team demands you to play at a strike rate of 100, you should be able to do it. It’s just about adapting to the match situation.
There shouldn’t be a certain pattern to your game where you are only able to play one kind of game and not being able to adapt to different situations,” said Gill as quoted by India Today.
“Only I knew I w0uld be playing the second Test match”
Gill also delved into his scintillating debut Test series in Australia. The 21-year-old stated that when the Indian side was bowled out for just 36 in the first Test against Australia at Adelaide, he was motivated to do well whenever he got the chance. Gill also added that Ravi Shastri had already told him that he would be playing the second Test at Melbourne.
“Seeing our batsmen getting out for such low scores, I think, it kind of motivated me more to do well whenever I got a chance. I was really determined to do well. Before the Adelaide Test only I knew that I’ll be playing the second match in Melbourne because that’s when Virat bhai was leaving so Ravi Sir told me that I’ll be playing from the second Test onwards,” concluded Gill.
