Sri Lanka to bid for hosting three major ICC events from 2024 to 2031
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has invited proposals from cricket countries across the globe for hosting the ICC events scheduled from 2024 to 2031. The cricketing body has formed an independent committee that will judge all the applications and will decide on the venues by December 2020.
There are four major ICC events that will be hosted including the ICC T20 World Cup, the Men’s ODI World Cup, the World Test Championship final, and the Champions Trophy. It is learned that Sri Lanka is planning to bid for hosting three major ICC events, scheduled from 2024 to 2031.
The T20 World Cups will be held in 2024, 2026, 2028, and 2030. The ODI World Cups will be staged in 2026 and then in 2030. The Champions Trophy will be staged in 2024 and then in 2028 while the World Test Championship finals are planned after every two years, in 2025, 2027, 2029, and 2031.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is hoping to make a joint bid with any other ICC member country for hosting the event. Notably, the cricket board is yet to reveal the name of the ICC members with whom they are planning to co-host the ICC events. Sri Lanka last hosted a major ICC event in 2012 in the form of the T20 World Cup. The cricket board released an official statement to confirm their interest in organising ICC events in the Island nation.
A media release from SLC stated, “Sri Lanka Cricket decided to bid for 03 Major ICC Men’s events to be held during the period of 2024 to 2031. Accordingly, bids will be submitted for the ICC T20 World Cup, Men’s Cricket World Cup, and the Champions Trophy. Sri Lanka Cricket, in certain events, will make a ‘Joint Bid’ in collaboration with an ICC Member country or countries.”
Pakistan planning to host 5 major ICC events from 2024 to 2031
Sri Lanka is not the only Asian nation that is planning to bid for hosting the ICC events. It is learned that Pakistan has also decided to bid for five major ICC events from 2024-2031. The Men in Green are keen on hosting ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, and Champions Trophy.
While Pakistan wants to host the Champions Trophy alone, they are hoping to collaborate with any other Asian nation apart from India to co-host the ODI and T20 World Cup.
