Sri Lanka announce squad for Asia Cup 2023
Defending champions Sri Lanka finally announced their squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, which is slated to begin on August 30 in Multan. Leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who finished the Lanka Premier League as the leading run-scorer and wicket-taker of the tournament will be missing the marquee tournament, along with the likes of Dushmantha Chameera, Lahiru Madushanka and Lahiru Kumara.
Hence, the bowling unit looks a bit pale but they have players who have a bit of experience in the international circuit. Binura Fernando and Pramod Madushan have found a place in the squad to replace the injured players, while a lot will depend on Matheesha Pathirana and Kasun Rajitha, who have done a good job in the recent past.
Kusal Perera meanwhile is part of the squad after a two-year gap. However, the cricketer is currently recovering from flu and hence, his availability in the initial matches looks doubtful. However, he will add much-needed experience to the squad when he returns and can even cement his spot for the ODI World Cup with quality performances.
Sri Lanka to play against Bangladesh in their opening fixture
The Dasun Shanaka-led side will be playing against Bangladesh in their inaugural match of the competition. Bangladesh, who will be missing Tamim Iqbal have announced a good squad for the competition but lacks a bit of experience. Despite so, the Shakib Al Hasan-led side is confident of their chances and will be aiming to qualify for the Super Four of the competition.
Sri Lanka too will have the same target. They will play their league matches in Pakistan but will be playing Super Four matches on their home turf. Hence, the target will be to qualify for the next round and then, once again challenge for the title.
