South Africa announce 15-player squad for T20 World Cup 2022
South Africa have announced their squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 and there’s a notable absentee in the form of Rassie van der Dussen. The dashing middle-order batter sustained a fracture on his left index finger during the recently-concluded second Test against England. This is indeed a telling blow for the Proteas side as the 33-year-old has been an integral part of the team for a while.
With Van der Dussen being ruled out of the tournament, youngster Tristan Stubbs has been included in the 15-player squad. The young dasher, who made his international debut a couple of months ago, has showcased his power-hitting abilities and the same earned him a maiden World Cup call.
South Africa likely to face the pleasant problem of plenty
Meanwhile, the rest of the squad features several big names in the form of David Miller, Quinton de Kock, Kagiso Rabada and Tabraiz Shamsi. The inclusion of Rillee Rossouw adds firepower to the top order and finalizing the playing XI can be a good headache for the team management. Meanwhile, the presence of all-rounders like Wayne Parnell, Dwaine Pretorius and Keshav Maharaj means South Africa will bat deep and can possess a massive threat to other teams.
Meanwhile, besides Rabada, the likes of Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje and Wayne Parnell will also enjoy bowling in bouncy Australian tracks. Overall, the squad looks balanced and skipper Temba Bavuma would be determined to end South Africa’s World Cup drought. For the unversed, the Proteas did well in last year’s T20 World Cup and won four of their five group-stage matches.
However, a narrow defeat to eventual-champions Australia cost them a place in the semi-finals. Hence, the team will want to make amends this time around.
