SL vs IND 2021: Squads, Fixtures, Timings, Broadcast, and all you need to know
For the first time in history, fans will witness two different Indian cricket teams simultaneously. While the Test side, under Virat Kohli, would be in England for a five-match series, a team of white-ball specialists would travel to Sri Lanka for three ODIs and many T20Is, starting from July 13. Needless to say, the squad for the Sri Lanka series will miss many prominent names, and it would be interesting to see how the Men in Blue perform.
Speaking of Sri Lanka, they haven’t tasted much success in the past few years. They travelled to Bangladesh last month and suffered a 1-2 defeat in the ODI series. However, they must leave no stones unturned to defeat the ‘second-string Indian team. Notably, they’ll host England in six limited-overs matches before taking on India.
India vs Sri Lanka Team News
Veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan will lead Team India in Sri Lanka while pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been named his deputy. This will be Dhawan and Kumar’s first leadership assignment in Team India colours, and the duo would be determined to deliver. Prithvi Shaw has also been called back in the white-ball team alongside Navdeep Saini and Sanju Samson.
Youngsters like Devdutt Padikkal, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Chetan Sakariya have received maiden call-ups thanks to their impressive performances in the Indian Premier League and domestic circuit. Among the experience faces, the squad comprises Hardik Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav and Manish Pandey. The side indeed looks balanced and is even deemed favourites for the tour.
Speaking of Sri Lanka, they need to put their best foot forward in order to challenge the Men in Blue. Wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Perera will lead the team, and a lot will depend upon him. It seems like Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) are looking to make the team for the future as veterans like Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal and Dimuth Karunaratne haven’t featured in white-ball cricket for a while.
This means youngsters have the onus to challenge the Men in Blue. Although Dhananjaya de Silva, Wanindu Hasaranga and Avishka Fernando have been impressive lately, the absence of experienced names can hurt the home team. Hence, calling Sri Lanka underdogs for this series won’t be wrong with Team India having all the bases covered.
