Shoriful Islam ruled out of ongoing Sri Lanka Test series due to wrist injury
Adding to the list of injured Bangladesh players is pacer Shoriful Islam, who got retired hurt on day four of the 1st Sri Lanka Test after bearing a blow on pacer Kasun Rajitha’s short delivery. In the same light of events, Shoriful has been ruled out of the remaining Test series against the Island nation and is even doubtful of being in contention for the West Indies tour.
It is to be noted that the pacer is the third notable injured player in the squad of hosts as they earlier had to let go of the services of Taskin Ahmed due to shoulder injury and Mehidy Hasan due to finger injury. After the pacer was retired hurt on day four, the hosts were forced to declare their innings on 465 runs. Team physio Bayjedul Islam opened up on the pacer’s injury in detail and added that it would take him four-five weeks of time to recover.
“Shoriful Islam had a contusion of the right hand while batting. After the fourth day’s play, an X-ray was carried out which has revealed a fracture on the base of the 5th metacarpal bone. Such injuries tend to take around three weeks to heal followed by a couple of weeks’ of rehab. He will not be available to play for four to five weeks,” said physio Bayjedul Islam said in a statement as quoted by Cricbuzz.
After Shoriful’s exit, the Board has not named any replacement for him for the second Test as they have a big squad in hand to pick from. The second Test between the two sides is all set to get underway on May 23.
“We did not take any replacement for Shoriful as we have got a big squad in hand. We have to see the fitness of Hasan Mahmud (who was in discussion as a possible replacement of Shoriful) and though we are not considering him in this series, if he is fit, we might pick him for the Bangladesh ‘A’ team tour of West Indies,” said BCB chief selector Minhajul Abedin.
