Shikhar Dhawan’s contributions remain in the shadow of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma: Wasim Jaffer
The T20 World Cup is approaching real soon and fans and experts can not stop talking over the same. In the same sequence of events, former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer added that ace batsman Shikhar Dhawan can’t be overlooked for the showpiece event. Jaffer stated that Dhawan has contributed immensely to the white-ball cricket of India but somehow his part got overshadowed by Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
It is a known fact that Dhawan is currently in Sri Lanka, leading a young group of cricketers for their white-ball assignments against the home team. Being a skipper, he flaunted his class in the first game itself by playing an unbeaten knock of 85 runs to end India’s chase when 80 balls remained. Though there are options with India for the opening slot, Dhawan shouldn’t be underestimated, reckoned Jaffer.
“The way the Indian team has come up the ranks in white-ball cricket in the past few years, a lot of credit goes to Shikhar Dhawan as well, even though sometimes his contributions remain in the shadow of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma who are obviously outstanding players. But I think we shouldn’t underestimate Shikhar Dhawan and I see him, at least for a year or two, a contender to play in this T20 World Cup and also the 2023 50-over World Cup,” said Jaffer on his YouTube channel.
Shikhar Dhawan shouldn’t be ruled out either in 50-over or T20Is, mulls Jaffer
Jaffer further went on to add that Dhawan’s performance in the last two IPLs has been outstanding and this makes his case serious for the T20 WC of 2021. Jaffer understands that India is going through a ‘problem of plenty’ and several experienced players are there for the opening slot but Dhawan cannot certainly be ruled either out of 50 -over of T20Is.
“You can’t rule out Shikhar Dhawan for the upcoming T20 World Cup. The way he has performed in the IPL in the past two years… even though we know Rohit Sharma is a surety to open, KL Rahul is a candidate, Virat Kohli said he wants to open, Prithvi Shaw is also coming up as a future contender, there are a lot of options. But Shikhar Dhawan shouldn’t be ruled out either in 50-over or T20 internationals,” Jaffer concluded.
