Shaun Marsh ruled out of World Cup with a forearm injury

Australian middle-order batsman Shaun Marsh has been ruled out of the ongoing World Cup, with a fractured forearm. The 35-year-old batsman was hit by pacer Pat Cummins during a net session. He will be replaced in the squad by Peter Handscomb.

Head coach Justin Langer confirmed the injury in his press conference, saying:

“Shaun Marsh has had scans on his right forearm after being struck while practicing in the nets at training today. Unfortunately, the scans have revealed Shaun has suffered a fracture to his forearm which will require surgery. This is obviously shattering news for Shaun and the squad. Throughout this tournament, his spirit, professionalism and the way he has competed has been typically outstanding.”

Australia also had another major scare in the net sessions as all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was also hit by a delivery from Mitchell Starc. But fortunately, his injury does not seem to be serious after reports came out from the initial scans.

Langer giving an update on Maxwell said:

“Glenn Maxwell also underwent scans after he was struck on his right forearm in the nets. The scans have cleared Glenn of any serious damage and we’ll continue to monitor him over the coming days. We are hopeful he will be fit to perform for us on Saturday against South Africa. We have made the decision to call up Peter Handscomb to replace Shaun in our World Cup Squad of fifteen.”

Marsh’s replacement, Handscomb was already in England as a part of the Australia A squad. He will join the side ahead of Australia’s final group stage encounter against South Africa on July 6 which will be played at Old Trafford in Manchester.
