Sam Curran looks at the funny side of playing against his brother Tom in IPL
England all-rounder Sam Curran was a revelation for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), hosted in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He was the only positive for the three-time champions in an otherwise forgettable season. In 14 matches played in IPL 2021, Sam ended up with 186 runs at an average of 23 and a strike rate of 131.91. With the ball, the youngster picked 13 wickets with his best figures being 3/19.
Curran carried his brilliant run in the 14th edition of IPL as well as he again proved to be a match-winner for Chennai. The second match of the now-suspended season saw Sam Curran and his brother Tom Curran becoming the butt of jokes on social media. Tom was a part of the Delhi Capitals during IPL 2021 and the siblings clashed during the match between CSK and DC.
Playing for DC, Tom was having a decent outing with the ball as he had given away just 17 runs in his three overs. However, the penultimate over of the innings saw him leaking as many as 23 runs thanks to his younger brother Sam who smashed two sixes and a four. The incident fetched a lot of attention from the fans as the netizens came up with hilarious memes featuring the Curran brothers.
We grew up so competitive always, says Sam Curran
However, this is not the first time that the two brothers faced each other during the IPL. The first time when Tom and Sam were up against each other was during IPL 2020 when the former was plying his trade for Rajasthan Royals. Curran had a dream outing during the clash against RR last year as he picked up three wickets for 33 runs and smashed a six-ball 17.
However, months after the incident, Sam Curran revealed how tough it was for him to bowl to his elder brother. Speaking to a podcast called Headstrong: An innings with Sam revealed that it was the first time he was playing opposite Tom and he couldn’t stop laughing while bowling to his elder brother.
“We grew up so competitive, always batting, bowling, fielding, doing everything. I’ve actually played against Tom in the IPL this year. On such a big stage, it’s pretty funny. I was running in to bowl, and I couldn’t stop laughing. You’ve got to try and be serious, but sometimes you’ve got to realize that it’s a bit of fun and whatever happens… happens,” Sam revealed.
