Sachin Tendulkar reveals an interesting anecdote from the 2011 World Cup final
From India’s dominance throughout the tournament to the heroics of MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir in the summit clash, the 2011 World Cup is still fresh in every Indian fan’s memory. In the final showdown of the tournament, India took on Sri Lanka for World Cup glory.
The hosts got off to a nightmare start as both Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag were sent back to the pavilion early. As Gambhir looked to steady the innings for India, Tendulkar nervously sat in the dressing room.
Tendulkar talked about the situation and how he did not watch a single moment of the World Cup final. Apart from that, the legendary Indian batter did not let his batting partner Sehwag watch any moment of the game as well.
“In an earlier game in Ahmedabad, I had been getting a massage with my head down, and Viru was sitting next to me, and we did well. So in the final, I stayed on the massage table and kept Viru with me. He said, ‘Let me see the game a little bit’. I said, ‘No, you see as much as you want on TV later’. And we won,” Tendulkar was quoted as saying by ETV Bharat.
Gambhir and Dhoni led India to historic win
Batting first, Sri Lanka scored 274 runs on the board thanks to magnificent knocks by Mahela Jayawardene and skipper Kumar Sangakkara. India were put under pressure early on, as both Tendulkar and Sehwag were dismissed for 18 and a duck, respectively.
However, it was the resilient innings played by Gambhir and skipper MS Dhoni, as they both scored 97 and 91* runs respectively to propel the Indian team to a historic World Cup win back in 2011. It was India’s second ODI World Cup win after Kapil Dev led them to theri maiden win in 1983.
