Rohit Sharma speaks on possibility of breaking Chris Gayle’s most sixes record
India captain Rohit Sharma is counted among the greatest white-ball batters in the world in the modern era. Rohit’s career has transformed drastically ever since he was promoted to open the innings in 2013 by former India captain MS Dhoni. Since then, the Nagpur-born batter has left the cricketing fraternity awestruck with his stupendous stroke play across formats.
Apart from being a technical sound batter, Rohit is also known for his six-hitting prowess. The Indian skipper currently ranks on the second spot in the list of most sixes in international cricket and is just 14 sixes away from levelling West Indies great Chris Gayle at the top. Speaking about the possibility of breaking the world record for most sixes in international cricket, the 36-year-old laughingly said that it would be a unique record if he manages to break it.
“It will be a unique record if I manage to break that. I never thought in life that I would be able to break Chris Gayle’s record one day (laughs). It’s funny but okay (flexes his bicep),” said Rohit Sharma in an interview with Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel.
Notably, Rohit has clobbered 539 sixes from 446 international matches and is only behind Chris Gayle on the list who has 553 maximums to his name from 483 matches. The Indian skipper is likely to break the record in the ongoing packed schedule of cricket till the end of the ODI World Cup 2023. Apart from that, he ranks on the top spot for most sixes in T20Is (182) and third spot for most sixes in ODIs (280).
Further being asked whether he’s aiming to play 100 Tests, the opening batter said that he doesn’t think too far ahead in his life.
What will happen in the future depends on what you do today: Rohit Sharma
“I don’t think too far ahead like this. I’m not someone who thinks too far ahead, right now I’m focused on the Asia Cup and World Cup 2023. We even have a short series against Australia at home and hence I’m focused on these short-term goals at the moment. That’s how I am even in my life, what will happen in the future depends on what you do today. That’s why I’m more focused on these things right now,” he added.
Notably, the 36-year-old has played 52 Tests in his career so far and considering his age, 100 Test matches could be a too far-fetched dream for the Indian captain. However, he would be more focused on leading his team to World Cup glory after 12 years on home soil.
