Road Safety World Series 2021: All you need to know about South Africa Legends
The first edition of the Road Safety World Series will be resuming the course after a long break. The tournament will now be held in Raipur at the Shaheed Veer Singh International Cricket Stadium. The original tournament which had started in March 2020, couldn’t be completed as the coronavirus pandemic stuck.
Now, finally, the teams will return to play the tournament. Unfortunately, the matches had to be shifted out of Mumbai and Pune, due to the restrictions set by the state government. Another big change that took place in the league is that Australia legends couldn’t turn up due to the rules in their country. In place of them, Bangladesh legends and England legends joined the league.
With captain #JontyRhodes, team @south_legends is pumped up to take over the field for their first match! Will @indieslegends be able to keep up with them? South Africa legends will have Jonty Rhodes back as their captain. There are a few more players like Justin Kemp, Alviro Petersen, Morne van Wyk, who have been added to the team making their combination quite solid.
Full squad
Jonty Rhodes (captain), Morné van Wyk, Garnett Kruger, Roger Telemachus, Justin Kemp, Alviro Petersen, Nantie Hayward, Andrew Puttick, Loots Bosman, Zander de Bruyn, Thandi Tshabalala, Monde Zondeki, Makhaya Ntini and Lloyd Norris-Jones.
Batsmen
The batting department of the South African legends boasts quality players of the past. Loots Bosman, Andrew Puttick, Alviro Petersen, Justin Kemp, Morne van Wyk and their skipper Jonty Rhodes will be their main batters. All of them have reasonable experience of playing T20 cricket. Bosman and Puttick will hopefully open the innings, with Van Wyk making a solid top three. Alviro Petersen can also open, so that would be one of the questions which Rhodes would be expected to solve.
All-rounders
Justin Kemp is one of the most experienced players in the current squad. He is a power-hitter and can be effective with his right-arm medium-pace bowling. Another all-rounder in their mix is Zander de Bruyn, who also has extensive experience of playing in the T20 format. He is a proper all-rounder, who can give the captain some really useful overs and also give them some assurance with the bat in the lower order.
Bowlers
The bowling unit of South Africa legends consists of some really quality players of the past. Nantie Hayward, Roger Telemachus and Garnett Kruger have all represented South Africa and have extensive experience in domestic cricket. But, the key player would be Makhaya Ntini, who has experience of playing in Indian conditions as well, but how much he can bowl would be interesting to see. Monde Zondeki and Thandi Tshabalala are also good additions to this team.
Wicketkeeper
The wicketkeeper of this team will be Morne van Wyk, who is a destructive opening batsman and can bat at any place in the batting order with a similar effect. He would be important to this team as he has experienced playing in T20s a lot. Interestingly, he even has a century in T20Is.
The first match which South Africa legends will play in this tournament will be against Sri Lanka legends on March 8. They played one match in March 2020 and managed to win that game against West Indies.
