Reports: Washington Sundar set to play for English county side Lancashire
Team India all-rounder Washington Sundar will soon be seen in action as he has nearly recovered from his hand injury and is currently doing his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). According to reports, the right-arm spinner has also signed a deal with leading English county side Lancashire to make his comeback and regain full fitness.
Sundar sustained the injury during a group stage match of the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) while fielding. He missed a few games subsequently but made a comeback in the second half of the tournament. Representing the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the 22-year-old played some good cricket in the tournament till he got injured. It remains to be seen if Sundar can make a strong comeback after recovering from his hand injury and make his place in the Indian squad.
“Washington is nearing full fitness and he needs a lot of game time, which he will get only in red-ball cricket. He is going to play for Lancashire and this exposure will do him a world of good,” a BCCI source was quoted by Times of India.
Talking about his numbers in the international arena, the 22-year-old has played 31 T20I matches and has scalped a total of 25 wickets. He has also played four Tests and ODIs each and has taken 11 wickets in both formats combined. With the bat, he has scored 369 runs across three formats with 96 being his highest score.
To note, the senior Indian squad will take on England in a rescheduled Test match starting on July 1. The focus will then shift towards the three-match T20I series taking place from July 7 (Thursday) and then the same number of ODIs starting from July 12 (Tuesday). India has already announced its squad for the Test series. This will also be Rohit Sharma’s first away assignment after being named as Indian skipper and he will want to perform well with the bat.
