Reports: Chetan Sharma likely to continue as chief selector

Chetan Sharma was appointed as the head of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) selection committee in December 2020 but was axed before finishing his term due to poor performances of the Indian team in 2022. The Sharma-led panel of selectors was dissolved last year as BCCI started inviting applications for the new selection committee.

However, according to reports by NDTV, the former Indian cricketer is set to continue as the chief selector. The same could not be said about his committee, as 13 ex-Indian cricketers have been shortlisted for the remaining vacant posts.

The report also suggested the names of personnel who appeared in the interview for the remaining vacant posts in front of the Ashok Malhotra-led Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). Chetan Sharma, Harvinder Singh, Amay Khurasia, Ajay Ratra, SS Das, S Sharath, and Connor Williams were among those who appeared for the interviews by the CAC on Monday. The absence of Venkatesh Prasad’s name from the shortlist was the biggest surprise since he was considered a front-runner to replace Sharma at the head of the table of the selection panel.

After dissolving the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee in November 2022, the apex cricket board put out an advertisement to fill up the vacated position of the committee. The press release stated that the ideal candidate “should have played a minimum of 7 Test matches or 30 First Class matches or 10 ODI and 20 First Class matches.” Also, the candidates, “should have retired from the game at least 5 years ago.”
