Reports: Bangladesh on standby to host the Asia Cup amid crisis in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has been under an economic and political crisis for a long time now, and the situations and scenarios keep worsening in the country. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had showcased its readiness to host the event, but with the political unrest in the country taking a new turn frequently, the Asian Cricket Council has put Bangladesh on standby to host the Asia Cup which is set to begin in August.
The ACC will be arriving at a final decision later this month and a clearer picture will be in front of everyone. SLC recently hosted the Australian Men’s team for a multi-format series that included three T20Is, five ODIs, and two Tests and also hosted the Indian Women’s team for a white-ball series comprising three T20Is and as many ODIs.
As per a report by the Indian express, the ACC does not want to take any risk in this matter and looks to keep things safe in case the situation in Sri Lanka worsens. The leaders of the country recently expressed their willingness to quit after Sri Lankan residents broke into the President’s home and also set the Prime Minister’s house on fire.
In fact, when protesters scaled the Galle Fort during the last test match between Sri Lanka and Australia to denounce President Gotabaya Rajapaksa for mismanaging the nation’s economy and call for his resignation, their rage nearly reached the playing field.
Sixth spot in the Asia Cup group vacant
A total of six countries will participate in the Asia Cup this year, with five spots already being taken by Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. UAE, Kuwait, Singapore, and Hong Kong will fight for the final place at the mega event. The four countries will participate in a qualifier competition in order to make their way to the final six. The Asia Cup will be a major boost for those countries who will go on to play the T20 World Cup in Australia this year.
