Record alert: Bairstow becomes first Englishman to score consecutive World Cup hundreds
Opener Jonny Bairstow on Wednesday became the first Englishman to register back-to-back centuries in a single World Cup edition. The landmark achievement came in England’s match against New Zealand at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street. Bairstow is also the 3rd English batsman after Kevin Pietersen (2007) and Joe Root to score two hundreds in the same World Cup. Root has achieved that feat in this year’s tournament.

Bairstow, who has been in scintillating form in this World Cup, finished the league stage with 462 runs in 9 matches at an average of 51.33. He scored his first hundred against India on Sunday and two days later, followed it up with another one against the Kiwis.
England now have 7 centuries from 5 of their batsmen, the most by any team in this tournament.
