Ramesh Powar retained as head coach of India Women’s team

Former India spinner Ramesh Powar got a second stint as the Indian women’s cricket team head coach last year. He succeeded WV Raman under whom the Indian eves had made the finals of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 where they went down to Australia in a one-sided contest.

Powar’s contract came to an end after the conclusion of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 in April. The Indian team failed to make the semis after a heartbreaking defeat against South Africa in their must-win final league game. Now, it has been reported that Ramesh Powar has been retained as the head coach which will mark his third stint.

India’s next assignment will be Commonwealth Games in Birmingham

“Ramesh will be the coach of the Indian women’s team for another year. He will work closely with the women cricketers in the coming months,” a BCCI official said as quoted by the Hindustan Times. The report further adds that “Powar has been interacting with the national selectors and the National Cricket Academy asking for the kind of players he wants for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and holding special camps in Bengaluru.”

While India were considered as one of the strong contenders to lift their maiden world title in women’s cricket after failing to clear the final hurdle in the previous edition in 2017, losses to big teams, namely Australia, England, New Zealand and finally South Africa did not help their cause which ended their campaign early.

Meanwhile, veterans Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami, who were playing their final World Cup, are yet to take a call on their illustrious careers after the team’s tearful exit from the quadrennial event.

The Women in Blue’s wait for an ODI World Cup trophy prolongs, but they do have a chance to become world champions in the shortest format in less than a year’s time. With the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup to be played in South Africa next year, Powar would be hoping to work on the strategies heading into the marquee event as the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side look to go one step ahead this time around.
